Throughout our lives we all experience events that shape us in some way or another, it can either be positive or negative. After the event happens often people reflect on why things happen the way they happened and if the outcome could have been different. Reflective practice requires a conscious effort to think about events and develop insight into them. If reflective practice is done often enough one might gain awareness of the event and the impact it has had on their personal and professional life. The benefits of reflective practice might be that it helps one consciously examine their performance with the intentions to improve, change or reinforce skills, behaviors, responses to situations and perceptions. In learning institutions reflective practice is incorporated in the curriculum because it helps determine academic needs for students as well as the instructors. (Toni, N., & Makura, A.H. 2015) It helps the development of strategies to improve one’s learning and teaching skills. Employers will be interested in knowing one does reflective practice because it gives them the impression you are always trying to improve your knowledge and approach to different situations in order to get a beneficial outcome. Employers want quality and cost-effectiveness. A personal example of reflective benefits would be working in a tourism office. I don’t always know the answer to questions tourists ask me. At the start of my summer job, I wasn’t familiar with the conditions of my work and how to explain things to visitors as the information delivered was unfamiliar. Individuals often get challenged when faced with reflective practice because of their own biases, perceptions and judgement that get in the way of accepting new ideas, perspectives and ways of dealing with difficult and challenging situations. Part of the reason why people don’t part take in reflection is because reflection takes a certain amount of risk. Individuals get afraid or uncertain of what other’s might about their opinions.
