Grandmother Fa, Dr. Aaron Glassman, and Harry Sanborn are similar in two noteworthy ways. The first way is that they are all considered to be elders in their respective fictional universes. The second way is that they are all portrayed to be wise and highly respected by the people in their lives - both largely due to their ages. The representation of these characters as being revered and full of wisdom demonstrates the tendency of the media to stereotypically portray elders, whether in a positive or negative way. In fact, he even tells us what he looks like when he says, “I do not carry a sickle or a scythe. I only wear a hooded black robe when it’s cold. And I don’t have those skull-like facial features you seem to enjoy pinning on me from a distance… Find yourself a mirror while I continue” (Zusak 307). Essentially Death is saying that because all humans die, we all resemble death. Humans can and will die, and thus he is one of the things that is constant between all humans. Due to this reason I drew a man looking into a mirror to show Death. I just…

She describes how she was left with one eye due to a dog attack, leaving the side of her face scared and an easy target for humiliation from not only children but adults as well. When struggling with an image issue at a such a young age, as Natalie did, it can prove to be very tolling on your personal view of yourself and the lack of self confidence. (p.102) As she did not feel comfortable in her skin, it shows at this young age how much she cared about fitting in and being liked while going through the trouble to mimic…

Not many could say that Mariatu Kamara’s life depicted in the novel, The Bite of the Mango was easy, but nevertheless ended with extraordinary accomplishments. Getting brutally tortured, raped, and hands severed is a large feat to overcome, and yet Mariatu grew to learn and accept her new life after the attack. As British novelist, Fay Weldon stated, “The writers, I do believe, who get the best and most lasting response from readers are the writers who offer a happy ending through moral development.” Mariatu did not physically experience a tremendous, fortunate event after the rebels attacked, but still managed to move on and endure the physical and emotional pain to succeed in life.…
