“I shall certainly find no friend on the wide ocean,”
I desire the company of a man who could sympathise with me, whose eyes would reply to mine.”
RW – These quotations introduce the major theme of loneliness and isolation. Links to how Victor Frankenstein always wanted that companion. “We accordingly brought him back to the deck, and restored him to animation”
RW on VF – The theme of creating life is evident throughout the beginning of the novel.
“Why not still proceed over the untamed yet obedient element? What can stop the determined heart and resolved will of a man?”
RW – Humans are at mercy of the elements, proving that the elements have great power. Yet this quotation also hints at the theme of ambition through Walton’s perspective.
“Elizabeth was mine – mine to protect, love and cherish”
“Since till death she was to be mine only.”
This gives readers an indication to Victor’s character, purely self-serving as it’s almost as if he sees Elizabeth as a new toy.
“Thus ended a day memorable to me; it decided my future destiny”
VF on inevitable fate. His sole interest in science acts as a catalyst for the Monster’s creation.
“...my father had taken the greatest precautions that my mind should be impressed with no supernatural horrors.”
VF – Ironic because Victor's father sent him to Ingolstadt in order to prevent him from being influenced by the supernatural (but to be educated in the sciences).. While not his initial desire, Victor's studies lead him to a place where his entire life will be impressed upon by supernatural horrors.
“I seemed to have lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit.”
VF – This shows Victor’s ambition transforming into obsession. The lack of soul may reflect the doppelganger effect, Victor’s soul has been transitioned into the Monster’s. “I became myself capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter”
VF - The power of giving and taking away life has always been a sacred one
