for me it was more impersonal and I wasn’t certain if the character of Smith actually was regretful. The confusion makes it harder to grasp while for me Baldwin’s story told of the personal experience and I feel sympathy for him because of the wrong done.
As a reader the technique that appeals to me more is first person point of view. Instead of just listing facts Baldwin took us on a journey through the experience in his voice everything he saw and felt. I find a more trusting source in Baldwin’s writing style than Capote because it is in first person. Since it was actually the author’s point of view rather than second hand information. I’d prefer to approach my reportage essay from a style like Baldwin’s because the definite source of experience of one who’d actually went through it or spectated it. The clear-cut connection makes it easier to embrace. The reporter doesn’t necessarily have to have the main role however the observation can be related through watching it happen.
