In The fault In Our Stars, by John Green, Hazel Grace Lancaster, is dealing with pain both mentally and emotionally. She deals with her pain by isolating herself from other people and it gives her the pain of feeling different and capable of diffusion. Her companion, Augustus Waters is helping her because he is a distraction from her not thinking about the pain she has. Also, her favorite author, Peter Van Houten’s book, can distract her through ways that can not be explained and make her realize her blindness towards her rough situations such as cancer and about her parents worrying too much. He holds this thought that he must be remembered as someone who actually did something positive with the life they were given throughout the whole story and replays it over and over. Although, Hazel has tried to convince Augustus that in the end everyone ends up being forgotten, he refused to get it through his head. No matter how many times he tried to get over the fact that even the most impact people can be forgotten too and that made him look a little selfish. In the end, he did realize that it does not matter if everyone does not remember him, as long as his loved ones remember all the good things he did in life. Just like Augustus and Hazel, Peter Van Houten, the author of Imperial Affliction, has much worse pain inside him due to his loss of his beloved daughter through cancer. Van Houten’s book ends with an unfinished note which made Hazel and Augustus visit him in person to ask questions. They were surprised at the realization that he had since become an arrogant alcoholic and had a deep displeasure in spite of humanity since he could not properly address his hardships.
