In your own words , detail the “for “ and “against” arguments with regard to innate and learned behaviour .Feel free to include your own opinion , but be sure to justify it. Try to include an equal amount of information for both sides . Use at least 500 words for your answer . There are two types of behaviour Innate and learned . Some people called Nativists believe that a child’s behaviour is innate. Innate behaviour is defined as a natural and instinctive and is present at birth , for example sucking which is an automatic reflex to a newborn baby. Babies instinctively know what to do . We know if we put an object near babies mouths they will try to suck, also this can often be seen during an ultrasound scan . This I have witnessed during my 36 week scan of my daughter who was sucking on her hand which was near to her mouth. Quote from Shelia Kippley – The Ecological Standards of Breastfeeding “ that sucking is one of an infant’s most common innate behaviours .After birth infants rely on the sucking reflex of both nourishment and comfort , sucking on their fingers or a fist is a natural response that most infants use to soothe .”

The Nativists believe that some of our behaviour are innate and we inherit some qualities which decides what person we will be. They also believe that our behaviour is mostly due to our genetics. Inborn instincts are naturally there.

Other automatic reflexes in newborns are swallowing , coughing and blinking . These reflexes are quick responses which we do automatically. A natural instinct to produce saliva to aid swallowing when we have food in our mouths , another is when something is lodged in our windpipe we cough to prevent choking also blinking to protect our eyes , these reflexes stay with us for our lifetime .
However some people believe the first few weeks after birth is due to automatic reflexes and some innate reflexes such as , the grasp reflex decline in time and by 4 months a infant will grasp voluntary so

Babies are born with many reflexes such as swallowing and sucking reflexes, rooting reflexes, grasping reflexes, startle reflexes and walking and standing reflexes. Most babies are born with these reflexes, if a baby is born before the fortieth week, and are described as premature, then they might need a little more time to reach the same levels of development as a baby which has not been born until the fortieth week. Many of the reflexes babies are born with help the baby to survive. For example they have a rooting instinct to help them find milk from a nipple or teat if their mouth or cheek is touched, then a suckling and swallowing instinct in order for them to be able to feed. Babies have grasp reflexes, where they will put their fingers around an object if it touches the palm of their hand. Babies usually make stepping movements when they are held upright on a firm surface and if startled they will usually react by moving their arms outwards and clenching their fists. In their first month babies start to change very rapidly. They will be starting to look less curled up and they will appear to be startled less often. Their sleep will now be beginning to be in a pattern. They will sleep quite a lot of the time but the time in which they are awake will be increasing, as they get older.…
