The theme of life of war is portrayed in the Realism stories, A Mystery of Heroism, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, and The Incidence in the Life of a Slave Girl . In these stories people go through some type of fight just to live. Each of these stories has a main character going through a life threatening scenario. These characters are at risk of losing their life so they can live on free. In Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, The main character is to be hanged for the crime he had committed. When he gets dropped the rope breaks and he falls into the river. He manages to untie his hands and feet, swim away and not be shot, but in the end it was just a dream, in situational irony he dropped and just died. He imagined the whole thing. The author was trying to outline how life is a battle. When he dropped and swam up to the surface he looked at all the nature around him, the will to live came to him. He fight and fight to stay alive and in the end he got to see his wife but the irony is he didn't get chance to, he sadly just dropped and died …show more content…
In the story Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, Linda (Harriet Jacobs) is a Slave for the Flint’s house.
She has been a hard working and loyal slave all of her life, but when her children are in danger of being sold away from her she takes action. She risks her life and runs away from the farm. Without their mother, children can’t be sold. She runs away to the North to hide away from her master. LIfe is a war is portrayed in this story through Linda’s struggles just to live and save her children's lives. Life is even harder as a slave. She had to worry about having her leg cut off and had all of her children's life depending on her. She had to sacrifice the little she had to
live. In A Mystery of Heroism, the main character, Fred collins is in the middle of a war and he and his team have been waiting for the call to attack about two days. Collins is thirsty as he spots a well on hill next to them. His team pressured him to run over to the well to get the drink he so badly wanted, so he does it. As he is running across the open field he gets shot at and almost dies. He eventually gets back to his team and ironically they spill the bucket of water he brought back. In this story even pleasing people is a battle. Not just surviving the actual war that's going on, it's a war just to be accepted by his own crew, to fill worth something to someone. He risked his own life just to prove he wasn't a chicken. When he got back with the water he was sought as a hero, but he didn't believe he was. He just wanted to get a drink and prove himself.
In these stories the real struggles of life are first shown in literature, Thats why its called realism. No more fairy tales, just realistic stories of people battling just to live. Some people battle for the weird things in life like Fred Collins proving others wrong. Others Fight for things just for their life to be back the way it used to be, and to be forgiven of their mistake like in Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. These stories show that life is a battle and it is worth fighting for, you just gotta keep fighting.
