I now pity slaves even more than I had in the past. Hearing how much it hurt every aspect of this woman’s life made me realize it is more than a phase of American history. It is truly a crime that these activities went on for so long, and especially the fact that people convinced themselves they were within their rights to decide another human being was lesser. No person should ever have to endure such horrible acts of brutality. Not only did this autobiography highlight the physical abuse slavery entails, but also it explained how the abuse affected her psychologically. On one hand I enjoyed this text because of the perspective it brought me regarding slavery. On the other hand it was difficult for me to read because I knew there was hardly ever going to be a happy time for the girl we watched grow up, yet I felt I owed it to her to continue since she was so brave for sharing her past pains. I am glad however, that I did read this book; I will truly never forget what this brave woman went through and how she came out content with her life on the other side of it
