Introduction

This assignment is based on the comparison of African slavery as against East Indian indentureship. It includes the position with which I have taken and evidence to prove my point.

Body

It is my view to argue that East Indian indentureship was not similar to African slavery. I take this view for several reasons; (1) Voluntary Decision and Forceful Will (2) Different Treatment (3) Payment

It can be safely argued that the Africans were enslaved for life and they did not have a choice to work on the plantations, they were forced to. Only few were free because of manumission which is the buying of their freedom or successful escapes. African children were born enslaved and there was no possibility of repatriation to Africa. On 5th May, 1838 Indian Arrival had begun. The indentured Indians were under a labour contract of five years. They had a choice to choose whether or not to work on the plantations for that given period of time. An ex-indentured Indian was legally free. Children who came from India and locally born children were not indentured. Indians also had the right to repatriation. Isn’t the fact that the East Indians made a voluntary decision and the Africans came by a forceful will evidence to prove that their circumstances were different?
The treatment of slaves and the Indian indentures were different. There were no laws on how the slave master could punish his slaves. They were brutally punished and beaten. Slave women were raped and no efforts were made to prevent it. On the other hand, this punishment was restricted for the Indian Immigrants. Some of them were abused, yes, but the law had forbidden it, they were protected from any kind of neglection or abuse. The slaves lived with the worst inhumane treatment where protection was not provided while the indentures, however, were backed up against mistreatment. Was there any similarity of how the two were treated?
The fact that the immigrants were paid is a significant difference from the slaves. Slaves were seen as property, not human beings in the eyes of the white planters. They did not get a cent out of their labour. The slaves worked for nothing. The planters enjoyed free labour for 400 years. Payments were granted to the East Indian immigrants. They worked and earned money to take care of their family and themselves. Therefore, East Indian Indentureship was not similar to African slavery.
Based on the historical evidence contained above, I therefore conclude that there are differences between African slavery and East Indian Indentureship, which are clearly mentioned.

Conclusion This assignment has been provided with all the evidence needed to support my opinion and I have learnt a lot from it.

Indentured servitude and slavery existed in the ‘New World’ primarily for economic and population growth. In the book, Going to the Source, Slavery was defined as “hereditary” and “a lifetime status” and the slave must serve for life, however, on the other hand indentured servitude was “contractual” and “voluntary” although the servant is forced to serve for a fixed amount of years. Indentured servitude and slavery are strikingly parallel to each other from the fact that both parties participate in physically demanding labor and endure severe punishments induced by their master, nevertheless, the contractual agreement to each party is quite different, plus the primary skin color of the of party heavily impacts the treatment and escape punishments…

In the 1600s black and white people related to each other by the first African indentured servants arrived in the Virginia Colony of the United States of America in 1619. They were indentured servants and not slaves because the Spanish had baptized them and the English believed that baptized people could not be enslaved. This era was truly the beginning of white opinions dominating Black lives across continents. However, blacks and white worked side by side, married each other freely, ran away from their masters together and even rose up against the rich together, guns were drawn. Blacks had the same rights as whites of the same social status. From 1640 to 1723 the American colonies, particularly in the South, passed laws that ate away…

The colonists who came to the New World all have a similar quality. They all used slavery in one way or another to achieve their goals. The colonists would depend on other people or groups in order to sustain a suitable lifestyle the choose. This is why so many colonists thought that working the slaves and indentured servants and giving them very austere living conditions was morally correct. Also, the government is a Democracy so since the majority of the people are colonists, the government is pro-slavery and pro-indentured servants. However, there were three main reasons why settlers came to the New World: for Gold, for Glory, and for God. All these people have a similar justification on the treatment of African slaves, indentured servants, and Native Americans and that is that their conditions of living is very harsh and that they will strip them of their possessions.…

Often, people became indentured slaves due to hardships that were inevitable during their time. Two examples of such people are John Harrower and Richard Frethorne. While John Harrower lived a somewhat respectable and comfortable life as and indentured servant, Richard Frethorne had a much more difficult time. One reason for this may be because of their time differences; Jon Harrower is from the late 1700s, while Richard Frethorne is from the mid 1600s. Between John Harrower and Richard Frethorne , there are several similarities and contrasting differences which classify them both as indentured slaves living very different lives. Both men experienced similar hardships, different home lives and conditions, and also similar and different physical and emotional situations and feelings.…

Slavery in the British North American colonies differed depending what colony they are in. In places where slaves were the majority, they were treated differently as opposed to places with few slaves. In South Carolina, there were more African slaves than there were European settlers. In New England and the Middle Colonies, there were fewer slaves and fewer plantations for the slaves to work on. Virginia and Maryland had lots of slaves, in addition to lots of tobacco plantations to work on; but tobacco does not take as much time to grow, so slaves performed other tasks as well.…

The syllabus states, “Well over half of the human development took place exclusively in Africa. Studying Africana therefore requires long-view historical markers derived from intra and extra African conceptual tools.” So I will start my essay before what we know as the modern world.
