My current knowledge about infant mental health services is centered on developing intervention plans that focus on zero to three-year-old infant. The ideology behind IMH to my own understanding is to address the various issues that may be affecting the proper development of an infant, where the emotional, physical and social attributes contributes to their growth.
What motivated you to take this class?
My motivation was based on the opportunity I had during my internship period with Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD). I was shadowing an infant mental health staff, but also restricted in participating in most of the duties they performed. At such a tender age they can recognize the voice of their care givers, even when their emotional feelings signal denotes a sad or happy mood. A caregiver need to realize that an infant recognize or feels the emotions that occurs, which can also make them excited or sad by what they experience through their caregiver and surroundings. Also, based on the content provided I personally view infant mental health according to the statement made by Madeleine (1997), ‘’we may not do much to change what happens before birth, but we can change what happen after a baby is bore’’ (p.2). this concept is what the infant mental health professional advocate for, that a child at such tender age of 0 – 3 can be provided with the best intervention plan to help change their mentality for good. There social environment at this tender age becomes as critical in their adult age. Trying to avoid problems that can develop later in life starts at this
