Public speaking is an area I feared for several years. My biggest drawback when it comes to public speaking is my lack of confidence. The session helped me realize that it is okay to be nervous, actually it is extremely common. Lacking confidence is something I struggle with regarding leadership as well. Leadership is a set of skills or behaviors an individual has or learns to have in order to help other individuals resolve conflicts, work as a team, and reach a shared goal regardless of cultural differences.
During the cultural competence lecture, Professor Crissman-Ishler helped me understand the differences between each individual; especially the exercise where I was a part of the middle class group. Although I am a part of the middle class group in real life, it still felt unfair seeing the upper class group advance their community while we were struggling with buying the basic necessities.
Adding cultural differences to my leadership definition is essential because being a part of a multicultural group, like the Women’s Leadership initiative, aided me come to the conclusion that each individuals differences can add a vital aspect to each given problem. Therefore, learning from every individual in the Women’s Leadership Initiative will help me improve as a leader by taking the things I acquire from each person and applying the skills to my every day leadership
