“Look at his eyes and his nose. So weird,” The children said. The life of an American in Spain is somewhat akin to an animal in a zoo, I suppose. The children had not known that I have lived in Spain for the last few years and had studied there language in college. I ignored the small children and attempted to walk away. The children kept following me as I walked away. It was as if I was some sort of alien and a brand new planet. The children soon stopped when I walked out of the city back towards my apartment. “Welcome students,” I say. “Today we will be learning about the history of the Spanish culture,” I tell the students
“Mr. Piper why are we learning about Spanish history when you’re teaching English.
“Good question,” I say. “We are learning about the Spanish culture because in order to learn something new you must know about whatever you already know. This means that in order to learn English you must learn about Spanish first.”
“Now let’s start. Does anyone know what kind of religion the Spanish culture has?”
“I do.” Says Pablo. “The main religion of Spain is catholic, but if you don’t want to you can follow any religions
“Good,” I say. “While Catholicism is practiced in Spain it also include everything from Islam, Judaism, Protestantism, and Hinduism, all of which have places where to conduct their rituals.” School only lasted 2 hours and by the time it was done is was 12 o’clock. At this time you must wait until around 2 o’clock for lunch. With the few hours left until lunch time I went home and got some more
