The causes and effects of eating disorders are just terrible, but many people can benefit from knowing them. Who is affected, causes, and effects are three main topics that people who are going through or know someone who is going through an eating disorder should know about. For starters, who eating disorders affect is one of the main points. Men are less commonly affected. Roughly 1% of men in the US go through an eating disorder. Women and girls are most commonly affected, in fact, 5% of women in the US struggle with an eating disorder. Children, can also go through this as well. 90% of young girls develop an eating disorder between the ages of 12 and 25 and about one half of the fourth-grade girls are on a diet. If a family member has been through an eating disorder the child might become affected. He/she could follow in a family member's footsteps and take on their bad habits. Another cause can be perfection or need to be perfect. Girls can think too much about being skinnier than everyone else. Also, they might try to fit in with the popular girls who do not accept their outward appearance including weight. Lastly, sports can commonly cause someone to take on eating disorder. Coaches and family members my pressure the child too much I'm telling them to lose weight so they can perform or play better. Many athletes can also struggle with self confidence. Some children may become embarrassed if they are overweight and put in the spotlight. In summary, the causes of eating disorders are very important to know
