Background of the Problem
Too much exposure to ultraviolet rays of light causes skin cancer. The two types of UV rays are UVA and UVB. Studies have shown that overexposure to UV rays is the leading cause of skin cancer. Dermatologists who have seen a steady rise in the number of people being diagnosed with skin cancer said they believed that the rise in cases has a clear link to the increased use of tanning salons. They said it is always hard to tell someone they have cancer, but it is especially difficult for them to tell people that have not even finished college yet (Salsberg, 2015, para. 3). Tanning salons have provided a simple and time efficient way for people to look like they have the perfect tan, which has many young people wanting to get artificial tans at salons. Little do they know how dangerous it is to get an artificial tan. Because of this, doctors are pushing lawmakers to ban tanning salons or make the laws stricter. One of the reasons tanning booths are so dangerous is because they use a certain degree of light intensity. Doctor Sophie Balk from The Children’s Hospital in Montefiore, New York, found that tanning beds emit about fifteen times more UV radiation than the noontime sun (Paturel, 2012, para. 15).
