This new technology led to the artists to begin to mass-produce their works. Before the work could be mass-produced the block of wood had been formed into the image. This was done by “[t]he artist’s design is either drawn directly on the block or on a sheet of paper which was glued to its surface. The cutter uses a knife similar to a penknife and carefully cuts away all the wood away from the sides of the lines which the artist has drawn.” After the wood was brought to the desired image/design the artist would season the wood to ensure that the block would not crack or warp. With this block the artist could then begin to produce prints. Prints could be produced cheaply and efficiently lowering the cost of what art used to cost for an original. The main reason for the reduced cost was the reduced the amount of time spent by the artist to produce the work. The artist could carve one block and transfer that image onto potentially thousands of mediums. With the creation of the concept of prints the middle class could begin to enjoy art a luxury that had been reserved only for the wealthy. With the emergence of a larger demographic of consumers’ artists began to produce more works propelling the industry…

Introduction Silk screening, also known as screen-printing or serigraphy, is a printing technique that involves passing ink through a porous fabric, thus creating a sharp-edged single-color image [1] created from a stencil. Multiple color images are realized by incorporating multiple stencils, one graphic and screen for each color. Silk screening is the process Protocase utilizes to provide labeling for connectors, switches, ports and other components, as well as company logos, graphics or text. The Silk Screen Process The process begins with the client providing either an electronic image of the required print or a sketch of the required print with enough detail so a Protocase technical representative can create a suitable electronic image. When providing an electronic image, clients must be aware that the image quality is critical to the resulting final screened image that can be achieved. The porous fabric Protocase uses for its screens contains 300 threads per inch; therefore the image we receive from out clients must be of at least that much detail. In other words, images less than 300 dots per inch (dpi) will not be of desired quality and may result in either blurred or jagged edges. Once the image (one image for each color to be screened) is received from the client, it is then printed on velum using a laser printer. Screens are prepared to have the image burnt in by…

    The Printing Press

It is argued that the printing press is one of the most significant inventions of all time ranked alongside the wheel and the plow (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). The man credited with its invention is Johannes Gutenberg, born of Mainz, Germany around 1400 (Childress, 2008). Johannes began his work with the printing press around 1430 and developed his first prototype somewhere around the mid-15th century. As with most inventions, Gutenberg’s press had precedents in history, especially in Asia where the Chinese had carved texts into wooden blocks (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). In the Netherlands, a man by the name of Laurens Janszoon produced a predecessor by using carved blocks of type that could be cut into letters (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press was a result of combining three different technologies already in existence; paper, the winepress, and oil-based ink into a single moveable type (Bantwal, 2011). Rather than using wooden letters, Gutenberg used his metal working background and replaced them with letters made of brass or bronze, he then adapted a version of a wine press where the top was used to align and press the letters against the paper that was then lined up and locked into a frame below (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). The first samples of paper arrived from China, and at the time paper was not durable enough for hand copied versions of books, instead vellum a much thicker medium was used (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). However, Gutenberg soon found out that the thinner less expensive paper worked very well in his press. Finally, Gutenberg found that the use of oil based ink did not smear like the commonly used egg-based tempera. Merging these technologies into one, Gutenberg made modern printing possible and economical.…

The Arts and Crafts Movement began in the last decades of the 19th century. It was developed by the ideas and views of William Morris who was inspired by John Ruskin. William Morris was a dynamic and multi-talented man. His name is “indissolubly linked to wallpaper design” (William Morris & Wallpaper Design, [sa]). All his designs were made by hand and not machines because Morris believed that “the tastelessness of mass-produced goods and the lack of honest craftsmanship might be addressed by a reunion of art with craft” (Meggs and Purvis 1998:179).…
