Once a lump is detected, a doctor does further testing to confirm if it is cancer or not.
A mammogram is a procedure that doctors will do to take a closer look at the lump or breast tissue. This is like an x-ray. If the lump is suspicious then a doctor will do a biopsy. A biopsy is when a doctor takes tissue from the breast and looks under a microscope to see if there are cancer cells. Cells that don’t have cancer are called benign. Malignant cells are cancerous. If the tissue shows cancer then treatment is needed. The treatment that is given depends on the size and stage of the lump or cancer. First, a doctor might do a lumpectomy. This is a small surgery to remove the lump. If the cancer has spread then a woman might choose to have a mastectomy. This is when the breast is removed. Other treatments include chemotherapy or radiation. These are two techniques that kill cancer cells. Environmental factors of breast cancer include: smoking, eating too much high fat foods, drinking alcohol, not exercising and being overweight. These are some of the treatments and causes of breast
cancer.
Living with breast cancer can be a difficult thing. It can affect the whole family. Patients can get sick from chemotherapy and lose their hair. They might feel scared and unsure about their future. Having a mastectomy can cause depression and fear that they look and feel different. People with breast cancer also live in fear that the cancer might come back. One in eight women will get breast cancer. There are 232,030 cases of invasive breast cancer worldwide. It is one of the major causes of death. On the positive side, according to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, there are over 3 million cancer survivors today. I think that breast cancer is a negative effect, because even though they are finding more ways to save people, we are still losing our loved ones to breast cancer.
