Cancer is a word we hope to never hear. Unfortunately, sometimes we do hear the word cancer and we have to face the cold hard facts that a loved one will be battling the fight of their life. To be specific when your mom called me and said “the results have come back, and it is Breast Cancer”. It knocks the wind right out of you. Now you are left trying to figure what to, what can you do? A million question’s run through your mind. You begin to do a little research to find out a little bit more about this deadly disease, and you find that breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells. Okay, well what exactly does that mean? Cancer is the result of mutations, or abnormal changes in the genes responsible for regulating the growth of cells and keeping them healthy.
If left untreated the cancer can attack and spread to the rest of your body. A tumor in your breast can be benign or malignant. A benign tumor is not dangerous, it grows very slow and will not attack other parts or organs of your body. A malignant tumor is dangerous, it is cancerous, and left untreated it could quickly attack other parts of your body. I know that there are some women who think that it is there fault that they have cancer, but the fact is that breast cancer is caused by a genetic abnormality. Only 5%-10% of cancers are due to heredity (from your mother or father). But, 85%-90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormality or a mistake in your genetic material, something you cannot control. Statistic show that 1 in 8 or 12% of U.S. women will develop breast cancer. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women.
