Cheetahs are a separate genus from other great cats, a genus of their own. Their genus name, Acinonyx, is a Greek word for “thorn” and “claw”. Differ from lions and leopards, whose retractable claws are designed for tearing flesh and climbing trees, cheetahs have semi-retractable claws providing solid grip and quick acceleration. The cheetah’s body is designed for speed – pure, raw, explosive speed. It’s small streamlined head; deep chest; long, light limbs; powerful hind legs; flexible shoulders and spine; long muscular tail for balance; semi-retractable claws combined to make cheetahs the fastest predator sprinter on the planet. A matured cheetah can cover more than 25 feet in one stride and reach a top speed of 60mph or more. More than half…

Thought to now be extinct, the pig-footed bandicoot was a small, ground-dwelling marsupial. It had a short, stiff coat that was orange-brown on the upper parts and light brown below, with dark bars over the back, which may have acted as camouflage, making it more difficult for predators to spot. It had a long, pointed muzzle, and long legs, with only two functioning toes on each front foot, hence the name ‘pig-footed’. The bandicoot…
