Informative Speech On Meningitis

A silent disease that can strike in the blink of an eye. The disease can be either bacterial or viral. But today, I will focus my efforts on a rather known disease called bacterial meningitis. Let me jump right in! Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges caused by a bacteria or virus. It is extremely important to know whether the disease is viral or bacterial, because, bacterial meningitis is more severe than viral meningitis. Bacterial meningitis can affect all age groups such as newborns, infants and children, adolescents and young adults, and lastly, older adults. Since infants and children are the topic of my discussion the following causes are associated with that age group. Streptococcus pnemoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae type

It is the bacterial secretions of meningitis that make it a serious condition, damaging delicate meninges that cover and protect the central nervous system. These secretions permit the bacteria to kill the organism’s living cells that become food for the bacteria. Certain secretions also protect the bacteria from being removed by the body of the organism that has been invaded. Streptococcus pnemoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b already present normally within the respiratory system’s mucous membranes. Haemophilus influenzae are rod-shaped bacteria, gram stain negative and produce endotoxins. It is common in children under the age of 5. Haemophilus influenzae has a protective barrier called a capsule that keeps it moist and sticky. Illness from H. influenza begins when it grows in large numbers outside of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat.
