A premature baby is a fetus that is born before or on the 37th gestational week. Before this period a baby isn’t considered ready to be out in the real world. The babies’ organs aren’t fully developed and if the baby is born premature it’s most likely that it will need to spend some time in the incubator where it will, be connected to machinery that will help them live while their organs finish developing. Many premature babies spend the first days or even weeks of their life on a ventilator. Sadly there are some babies that die because their organs are too immature to function properly on their own and outside the womb. But if premature labor could be delayed, with certain treatments there is a higher chance of the baby surviving, because every additional day a baby spends inside the mother’s womb counts. Asthma is common in babies born premature, the lungs are the last organ a fetus develops inside the womb and the majority of the preterm babies lungs aren’t ready to function once delivered by the mother. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, which is also known as BPD, is a chronic lung disease in which the lungs grow abnormally or causes them to become swollen. Only with time will this get better, but the asthma like symptoms will always persist. SDR is the main cause of preterm baby’s deaths. When lung surfactant is lacking, the baby can’t receive any oxygen, because this helps the infant maintain his lungs full of air. When this is missing the baby will then receive oxygen through a tube and a substitute lung
