Emma Mauger September 25, 2024 COMX 111-801 Informative Speech Outline Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the purpose of bees and why they are endangered. Introduction: Bees are responsible for pollinating about 75% of the world’s flowering plants and around 35% of global food crops. Many of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we eat could disappear without them.

Today, I will discuss the role of bees in pollination and ecosystems, the causes of bee endangerment, and how we can save the bees.

Transition: Let’s begin with the role of bees in pollination and ecosystems.

Main Point 1: Bees play a critical role in pollination, which is essential for the survival of many plants and crops.

Subpoint 1: As pollinators, bees transfer pollen between flowers, allowing plants to reproduce and produce fruits, seeds, and vegetables. This process supports biodiversity, ensuring that ecosystems remain balanced and healthy. According to Randal (2020), “Honeybees alone pollinate 80 percent of all flowering plants, including more than 130 types of fruits and vegetables”. When bees collect nectar and pollen from flowers, they unintentionally transfer it to other plants. This process is called cross-pollination and is crucial for genetic diversity in plant species. Many plants rely on bees for this process, allowing them to produce seeds and continue their lifecycle.

Herbivores, such as rabbits and deer, rely on plants for food, while smaller creatures, like birds and insects, depend on the seeds and fruits that result from pollination. The plants that bees pollinate also help in soil stabilization, which prevents erosion and improves water quality by filtering pollutants.
