I. According to a newspaper article in The Washington Post, good sleep is important to the brain. There are five different stages of sleep, the first four occurs for about 75% of your sleep and are all grouped into non-rapid eye movement. The last stage is called rapid eye movement and this occurs for about 25% of your sleep. A. The average sleep cycle last for about 110 minutes. The first four stages of sleep occur during the first 90 minutes of sleep, and they go in order from stage 1-4 while you are sleeping.
1. Stage 1 occurs for about ten minutes, during this time you are in light sleep, the time just before falling fully asleep.
2. Stage 2 occurs for about 20 minutes after stage 1, your heart rate starts to slow down and your body temperature starts to drop, your body is beginning to fall into a deep sleep.

According to an article in Optometry Today, the final stage of sleep is called REM sleep or Rapid Eye Movement sleep. This occurs for about 10-20 minutes or 25% of your sleep cycle. This is when the parts of your brain associated with vision and memories spike in activity.
1. REM sleep is the final stage of you sleep cycle, it occurs after stages 1-4. During this stage your heart and breathing rate gets quicker. Each time you get to this sleeping stage your sleep can progressively get longer, sometimes up to an hour longer. This is also the stage you dream in.
