The Alaska Department of Fish and Game In the beginning, Game management in Alaska was almost non-existent. It started in 1949 just as a fishery service put into place by the Territorial Legislator. The idea of the this wasn’t to control all the fish, but to influence the federal government 's way of looking at fish management in Alaska. It wasn’t until 1957 when the Alaska Fishery Service was changed to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
The first commissioner of the Alaska fishery service was Andy Anderson. He was put in charge of the entire sector from 1949 up until the mid 1960’s. It wasn’t until after Alaska became a state that Andy got officially put …show more content…
The state legislature also created a board for the Department of Fish and Game. This board consisted of nine citizens that had to be approved by the governor and also had to have the majority vote from the state legislator. It wasn 't until the spring of 1975 when the legislator voted to separate the board into smaller boards scattered throughout the state which still goes on through today. The sport fishing division is in charge of the hatcheries that are located all over the state, they also manage a national estuarine research reserve that is located in Homer. This reserve covers 372,000 acres of Kachemak Bay and this is used for constant monitoring and research of the birds, fish, and aquatic plants that are located in the area. These are a few of the divisions main responsibilities. This division reports their findings and data to the Alaska Board of Fisheries which is in control of the allocation of the fisheries and regularity resources.
