Destruction is the act of an object being destroyed or injured beyond repair, it something that can cause great distress. The act of destruction can come in many forms, but for Hiroshima and Nagasaki it came in the form of an atomic bomb. In George Orwell’s 1984 it came as the bombing were the Proles live as well as Winston going against the Party. The events in Japan as well as in 1984 can teach that certain actions taken can lead to destruction.
The constant fighting between Japan and the United States as well as the wars in 1984 caused irreparable damage. On the fated day of August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m. the very first atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan, three days later another bomb was dropped in Nagasaki, Japan on August 9 at 9:00 a.m (Fenton1-2). The bombs were dropped by the United States in an attempt to end the war. The bombings later led to Japan’s surrender on September 2,1945 (Majerol 2). Japan. Most of those fights took place overseas, but eventually ended with the atomic bombings. Just like in George Orwell’s 1984, Oceania is at a constant war between Eurasia or Eastasia. All throughout the novel Winston talks about war and him not remembering a time when Oceania had not been at war; he even mentions how there was a constant war in his past. The war in the novel continues until Oceania makes a strategic maneuver that helps them to become closer to winning the war.
It takes just a few moments to destroy an area with an atomic bomb. The bombings in Japan as well as those in 1984 caused great physical destruction to the landscape as well as to the people. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima, known as the Enola Gay or Little Boy, was equivalent to 12.5 thousand pounds of Trinitrotoluene (Fenton 2). Fat Man, the bomb dropped in Nagasaki was almost twice the power of the one dropped in Hiroshima (Fenton 2). With a bomb that carried all that power many houses were destroyed on impact as well as the amount of people killed. About 70 percent of the buildings in Hiroshima were destroyed, and between 150,000 and 250,000 people were killed (Majerol 2). Due to the bomb being atomic many of those who survived later died of diseases cause by radiation. Also because of how bad they were affected, most of the damage done to the buildings was irreparable. In 1984 Winston describe many instances where he can hear, and sometimes see the bombings. In one occasion Winton is present when a bomb was dropped and he saw how the buildings crumbled and set on fire. During that time he also saw some of the injuries, like a severed hand.
Both the events that happened in Japan and to Winston show what happens when you take on a greater force.
The actions Japan took ultimately led to its own destruction with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On December 7, 1941, the day that will live in infamy, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii; that led the to the United States entering World War II (Majerol 2). Japan’s decision to attack led the United States military to retaliate. The United States retaliated by releasing the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By attacking a greater force, like the United States, Japan led itself to its own destruction. In 1984 Winston made a similar decision by choosing to go against the Party. Winston was well aware of the fact that he was going something much stronger that himself, but he still decided to continue. This eventually led to his torturing and pain. By going against a greater force both Japan and Winston led the way to their own
destruction.
Certain actions taken can lead to destruction, like those that happened in Japan as well as in 1984. The decisions Japan took to attack a powerful force lead to its own destruction. The war in 1984 also caused physical destruction to its landscape as well as a numerous amount of people. Also in 1984 Winston’s decision to defy the Party lead to his pain and mental destruction. It is impending for destruction to occur during a war, some places may suffer more than others, but that is just inevitable.
