North Korea is the most isolated country on earth. Along the border of North and South Korea, the 148 mile long border is the most heavily militarized in World. This joint South Korea and American platoon, is on constant alert for infiltrators from the north. Behind these fences, North Korea has a million man army and now nuclear weapons that they can use or possibly give away to the terrorist. The solders can monitor every sound and movement close to the border, but what makes this place so dangerous is the uncertainty of what lies on the other side of the divide. Dr. Sanduk Ruit is literally planning to bring light to the darkness of North Korea. He’s an eye surgeon of Nepal, and travels the world to set up eye clinics in developing countries. He trains local doctors in inexpensive and effective treatments for Cataracts, but North Korea may be his biggest challenge yet. He will perform 1,000 surgeries for North Koreans in ten days, and it will all be filmed. Americans are not welcome in North Korea. Korean animosity towards the US hasn't changed ever since the Korean War, which was more than a half century ago. They still view us as imperialist, and hold us responsible for dividing the country, between North and South.
In 1910 Korea was colonized by Japan. The brutal occupation ended more than 1000 years of Korea rein as a sovereign nation, and was a major source of shame. Japan lost Korea in World War II, and the country was split between the American back South and the Russian backed communists North, led by a young rebel named Kim Il sung. 1950 he invaded the south to unify the country, and the US oppose communist expansion mansion at all costs. Four million people died in the Korean War, which included some of the most brutal warfare the world has known. In a period of four months, the US has dropped nearly 1,000,000 gallons of Napalm. 18 of 22 major cities of North Korea were at least half obliterated. 1953 after three years of fighting, Korea remains divided in almost exactly the same place it had been before the war began 38th parallel. While most people think that the war ended 50 years ago, there never was a peace treaty and more than 19,000 days later the very long sea-spire use continues today.
The demilitarized zone (DMZ) is a 2.5-mile wide buffer, which runs 148 miles along the border of North and South Korea. With more than one million land mines, high-voltage electric fences, and nearly 2,000,000 soldiers crossing over is almost certain suicide. The DMZ helps North Korea keep its own citizens inside the country, and cut off from the rest of the world. The government chose 1000 people for whom doctor Sanduk should do surgery on. Cataract is a disease that causes blindness and is very popular in North Korea. It’s popular because of their nutrition health, but in the west side it's extremely unpopular. Children and adults are dying fast, since there isn’t a big amount of food. In 1990 when there was a huge famine, North Korea lost 40% of its population. Kids that are between seven and eight years old are 8 inches shorter and 22 pounds less than what they should be compared to the South Korean children. Kim Il Sung does not allow anything to be brought in from any other country, or anything to be brought out from North Korea.
There’s a room where the North Koreans and the South Koreans have meetings, and there is one door from each side to enter.
The soldiers hold each other's hand when opening the door, just in case one from the other side tries to pull them away. Simply just by trying to get a message shows how much relations have broken down. Kim Il Sung created a philosophy known as Juche, which means up yours to the outside world, we can make everything ourselves we don't need to. When Kim Il Sung died in 1994, the whole North Korea was devastated, but then his son Kim Jung Il took over. He also uses the Juche method. If the people don't do what was commanded, then Kim Jung Il punishes them by being in a concentration camp. Most people that enter the concentration camp don't leave alive. Therefore the people try to escape even though they might get caught.
Dr.Sanduk went to check on his patients after the surgery. He realize that once each patient could see, they immediately went to Kim Il Sung picture and praised him. The North Koreans are not in true belief, but they are in true fear. It’s a place ruled by an absolute dictator, who now possesses nuclear weapons. It’s no longer possible to regard the country as an isolated anomaly. What happens here in the hermit kingdom can directly touch everyone in the
world.
North Korea is a peculiar country, but not everyone is the same. It’s very challenging to live in North Korea, since a person doesn’t have any freedom. Even though they’re completely controlled through an absolute dictator, they still are humans who are one of us. We the people need to treat everyone with respect, and there should be no judgment upon North Koreans.
