Inside Out And Back Again Analysis
Inside Out and Back Again: Real World Comparisons People around the world are leaving their countries in order to escape the hardships they are enduring where they live. Inside Out and Back Again is a story written by Thanhha Lai. She writes about a young girl named Ha, and her family’s experience as a refugee. Real life refugees’ stories are very similar in comparison to Ha and her family’s story as a refugee. One major experience Ha and her family are going through, as well as many real world refugees, is being forced to flee their home. “Since the war began two years ago, more than 200,000 people have been killed, while another 2 million have been driven from their homes” (Brice 25). These refugees are being forced to flee their homes, just like Ha and her family and hundreds of others in Inside Out and Back Again. “Now, crammed in the small boat with about 70 other migrants and refugees, he dreamed of starting a new life in Europe” (Rebecca 9). This article provides information that is almost exactly like Ha’s family’s previous situation. They were crammed into 1 then 2 small boats with hundreds of other refugees under substandard conditions, but persevered through the tough time because they hoped for a better …show more content…
In Ha’s story, not only are they afraid of the dangers of the war, they have to decide whether or not to leave their home, they have to ration food and water consumption while fleeing, once they get to America they have to learn a completely new language and learn and adapt to new customs, they even have to deal with that fact their father is missing now to learn his remains have been found and he has passed away. “Their father was kidnapped by Serb forces in 1992” (Brice 26). Not only Ha’s family, but other refugee families have to face missing a huge part of their family and lifetime. Not to mention the many other hardships refugee families have to face

The lives of refugees are turned inside out when they faced discrimination and getting bullied. In the poem “ Inside Out and Back Again ” Ha says “ A pink boy with white hair on his head and white eyebrow and white eyelashes pulls my arm hair. Laughter. It's true my arm hair grows so long and black.”(pg. 187/188) This demonstrates that Ha’s life is turned inside out when she got bullied by her long black arm hair, because she is getting bullied just because she looks different from the rest of her peers. Even though the bullies didn’t know Ha very well, they still bullied her and they take pleasure out of bullying Ha. Lots of refugees faced this problem of discrimination and discrimination causes them to have no self-esteem. In the article “ Refugee Children In Canada: Searching for Identity ” discusses that both refugees and immigrant children may encounter society discrimination and racism, and both have to accomplish the central task of childhood and adolescence. This shows that refugee lives are turned inside out when they faced discrimination and racism because of how they look and their culture like how Ha was bullied by her looks. People judge refugees by their…

Turning inside out is a part of the universal refugee experience that is caused partially by the refugee’s grief and by discrimination that they face in their new home. When refugees flee they leave behind everything they know and often miss what they have left behind. Shortly after arriving in the United States one Bosnian refugee Amela Kamenica spoke about Bosnia saying, “Sometimes I wish I’d stayed there, watching the war, rather than being here, safe, but without friends” (Brice 26). Even though the country a refugee has immigrated to may have many advantages, a part of the universal refugee experience is missing the home that they have left. Ha also misses her home…

One universal challenge that Ha and other refugees struggle with is being ridiculed and judged because they are not of the same religion as everyone else in the new country. Therefore, they are bullied / harassed because of it. “I hate everyone!!!! A lion’s paw rips up my throat, still I scream, I hate everyone!!!!” (Lai 209) Ha, from Inside Out and Back Again, feels she does not belong. She is so upset about this, that she is outside of her home, screaming, “I hate everyone!!!!” “Sometimes I wish I’d stayed at war rather than being here without friends” (Brice) The quote is self explanatory, really. She wishes she stayed back home in the war sometimes, because she deals with discrimination and harassment at school, and feels it would be better…
