In the story, Pinkboy was having trouble multiplying two numbers and then Ha went up to the board. She answered the problem and embarrassed Pinkboy. In the novel it stated “ ... but right now I feel smart” (188). This demonstrates that Ha’s life is “back again” because she now feels smart again like she did in Vietnam. Before, Ha did not feel smart because she could not express what she had learned in Vietnam. But now she could show how smart she was by answering a question that Pinkboy could not. Another way Ha’s life was “back again” was when Miss.Washington was helping Ha learn English. Ha was having a hard time learning English which made it hard for her to communicate with others in her class. In the novel it stated “She makes me memorize one new word a day … My vocabulary grows! She makes me learn rules I’ve never noticed” (166). This proves Ha’s life was “back again” because she was now better at communicating with others. Before, Ha could not express what she felt with others which made her really frustrated. But now she can stand up for herself when she needs to and actually communicate more with her new classmates. By the end of the book, Ha’s life was “back again”. Inside Out & Back Again is definitely the best title for this novel because it described exactly what happened to Ha’s life. Like many other refugees, Ha’s life was turned inside out but luckily, her life was “back again” by the end of the book.
