Midterm questions 4 & 5

4. Who is Maria Clara in the personal life of Jose Rizal? What is the significance of Maria Clara in Rizal’s personal life particularly during his day in Europe?

Maria Clara is the childhood sweetheart and fiancée of Noli Me Tangere 's hero, Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra y Magsalin, the son of Don Rafael Ibarra. Maria Clara’s character is based on Leonor Rivera, Jose Rizal’s real life girlfriend and cousin.
It was Leonor Rivera’s father, Antonio Rivera, Rizal’s uncle, who brought Rizal his passport when he went to Spain. Leonor Rivera and Rizal constantly wrote love letters to each other. They remained connected for quite sometime but then Leonor’s mother wanted to stop the relationship because it was a forbidden one so she bribed the post office guy to give her all the letters and gifts to her so that Leonor would receive any. Since Leonor wasn’t receiving any letters form Rizal she started to think that Rizal was sick or and so their relationship reached its end but this does not ended their love for each other and even though Leonor was forced to marry other man she remained in love with Rizal. Leonor Rivera epitomizes Filipino women who are loving and loyal. Their love symbolizes commitment, honesty, and truth.

5. Is the Catholic church of today similar to Rizal’s? Why did Jose Rizal use the Spanish friars as part of the major characters in Noli Me Tangere?

Somehow there are similarities between the church during Rizal’s time and the Catholic Church today, in my opinion the similarities are drawn out from the way the Catholic Church uses their influence and power in order to remain in control of the country and its citizens. The situation differs from then and now but I think the intention is still the same and that is to influence and control the citizens and they meddle on things related to politics which is not part of their role but they still try to control it. The friars have made the

Catholic Church believes that Rizal’s writings will discredit the present Catholicism. But Recto claimed that without Rizal’s works, there will be no Filipino bishop today. Along with the Catholic Church, Jesus Paredes, radio commentator, is against the bill because for him, Catholics had the right to refuse to read Rizal’s work as it would endanger their salvation. Also, Francisco Soc Rodrigo, Mariano Jesus Cuenco and Decoroso Rosales are not in favor to the said bill. They asserted that unity will never be established and it would only result to a crisis. These three described Rizal’s Law as “an instrument of vengeance” against the Catholic community. Rodrigo pointed out that Rizal become a hero because of his suffering not because of his works or writings, the reason why they think it is unnecessary to include reading his novels, because for the opposition, people who will read the novel will lose religious faith since the novel implies the cruelty of the church and it contained errors of the church doctrine. Aside from the mentioned oppositions, the Congregation of the Mission, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Teachers Guild are adjacent to Rizal Law.…

Another thing that I noticed was that they were comparing Rizal’s birth to Jesus’ birth. Logically speaking, these ancient beliefs or stories are not all true and because of this, it made me realize that other people, even in the same place since they have different groups or divisions has their own version of the story on how Rizal was born. Rizal as a prophet may be accepted in some way but not to the point that the Church will accept Rizal as a prophet sent by God from the heavens mostly because during Rizal’s time as he was writing his other books, he somewhat opposed the Church. So what is his relevance to the Church? Nothing, right? I know we may not have the same point of view but for me, everything in this article does not make any sense. Well it does, to other people or the ‘Rizalians’, but as a Catholic, I would not give in to this kind of idea nor even believe whatever other people believe in with regards to their beliefs in Rizal’s so called…

Rizal is known to be a Philippines’ national hero. He was able to contribute with the Filipinos in order to proclaim independence from the Spaniards. Rizal has a unique style in which he informs Filipinos about the cancer of the country during the Spanish regime. He wrote two novels, the first novel (Noli Me Tangere) was all about the harsh doings of the Spaniards with the Filipinos and the second novel (El Filibusterismo) was the symbolism of realization that Rizal wants Filipinos to know. During the Spanish Era, it was illegal to do something against them and that was the reason why Rizal was prosecuted and sentenced to death.…

PURPOSE OF THE TEXT: Jose Rizal wrote Noli Me Tangere during the time of the Spanish occupation in the Philippines. The novel is a reflection of what the Filipinos were going through during that time. He wrote it to open the eyes of the Filipinos to the reality that they were being oppressed. Rizal's book persistently unmasks contemporary Spaniards in the Philippines of every kind. He exposes corruption and brutality of the civil guards which drive good men to crime and banditry. He focuses on an administration crawling with self-seekers, out to make their fortune at the expense of the Filipinos, so that the few officials who are honest and sincere are unable to overcome the treacherous workings of the system, and their efforts to help the country often end up in frustration or in self-ruin.The Noli is Rizal's exposé of corrupt friars who have made the Catholic religion an instrument for enriching and perpetuating themselves in power by seeking to mire ignorant Filipinos in fanaticism and superstition. According to Rizal, instead of teaching Filipinos true Catholicism, they control the government by opposing all progress and persecuting members of the ilustrado unless they make themselves their servile flatterers.…

The film was all about different controversies surrounding Rizal and the highlight was the Retraction Controversy. Did Rizal, in his last few days, ever wrote a letter withdrawing his attacks to the Catholic Church? If he did, what could have driven him to write that? The retraction letter is really controversial because if Rizal did write that, it would turn out that he does not deserve to be called a hero after all. The film makes me feel like I am in the Hispanic time because of the black and white feature. But this did not bring me to sleep because of the film’s humor that balanced a very serious topic: The Retraction Controversy. It was not an ordinary film about Rizal’s heroic life and suffering like many directors and filmmakers have done before. I salute every brains behind the film, for going beyond the normal and for making me see that Rizal is not that godly since he also had unrevealed secrets and unsolved controversies just like any human. He could have been inconsistent with his ideals because if not, controversies like this would not arise. His alleged inconsistencies made him a “Bayaning Third World”. I even think Rizal would agree as him being a “marupok”, he was just like any of us who had weaknesses and didn’t want to be perceived as god-like. The characters show that they respect their elders. Dr. Jose Rizal show this to his elder sisters Narcissa and Trining, to his elder brother Paciano, and to his mother. In spite of oppression by the Spaniards to the Filipino people, the director showed in the characters of Ricky Davao and Chris Villanueva as film makers that the Filipinos are joyful. In the characters of Dona Theodora (also called Dona Lolay), Trining, and Narcissa being God-fearing was shown by going to the church to attend the mass, and by performing the rosary. The family of Rizal sent him to school. Rizal has strong value of this because he made sure that he will finish Medicine. He didn’t just study here…

    * Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra y Magsalin, commonly referred to the novel as Ibarra or Crisóstomo, is the protagonist in the story. Son of a Filipino businessman, Don Rafael Ibarra, he studied in Europe for seven years. Ibarra is also María Clara's fiancé. Several sources claim that Ibarra is also Rizal's reflection: both studied in Europe and both persons believe in the same ideas. Upon his return, Ibarra requested the local government of San Diego to construct a public school to promote education in the town.…

Rizal had published books such as the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, as his weapons against the dominions of Spain in our country. These novels became an inspiration over the “KATIPUNAN” or the “Sons of the People.” Andres Bonifacio condemns the friars and he said that the Spain is deaf and blind, they only make people become imbeciles and criminals. The only way for independence and freedom is through revolution. The Katipunans tear their ‘cedulas’ that symbolizes to end all of their ties with Spain and unity with revolution.…
