Rob Dander, project manager in the Operation Research Department (ORD) was charged with managing a large computer project for Antar’s new manufacturing process. Dander was assigned three assistants to help with this project, all with different experience levels. The team was to function as a high-performance product development team, however they lacked sufficient tools to do so. “The primary problems of poor communication and poor coordination of typical product development processes in organizations can be rectified by creating self-managing, cross-functional product development teams” (Griffin and Moorhead, 2014). Implementing an effective revamp of Antar’s manufacturing process with the installation of a robotics system lay in the findings of Dander’s team. “The ORD would run a full-scale simulation of the entire manufacturing process and determine the working requirements that would optimize production while lowering costs. A major concern of management was to establish a program that would occupy minimal computer time and which could easily adapt to changing parameters and inputs. A secondary objective was to use the simulation to train operators on how to manipulate the new computer monitors which automation would bring” (Seijts, 2006). Thus, it is clear that management had a large investment in the outcome of the project with the company’s need to stay competitive in the market by cutting manufacturing costs.…

“Validity is the extent to which a test measures what we actually wish to measure” (Cooper and Schindler, 2014, p.257). “Reliability has to do with the accuracy and precision of a measurement procedure” (Cooper and Schindler, 2014, p. 257). Validity is more critical to measurement than reliability because without validity, reliability is meaningless. For example, a bathroom scale may give a weight each time a person weighs themselves, which proves the scale is reliable in giving feedback. If the scale displays an incorrect weight each time then it is not a valid weight and a person cannot accurately measure themselves to know if a goal is being met or not. Validity and reliability can also be thought of in terms of a person and their work. A person may show up to work on time and complete all tasks that are required everyday, which proves they are reliable, however if they tasks are not completed correctly then there is no validity to work and it must be redone. Finally, validity…

Description: Product life cycle management (PLM) is a set of business processes and supporting tools which help firms to improve the way they manage their product development. It is particularly useful for textile and apparel manufacturers who need to respond to new fashion trends quickly or collaborate closely with customers and suppliers in order to remain competitive. In general terms, PLM systems can help companies to improve their internal and external communications, ensure that everyone is using the same data, and organise the flow of data between participants involved in a product’s supply chain. Several software companies offer specialised PLM packages which are geared to the textile and apparel industry—including large global organisations such as Lawson and Lectra as well as smaller software suppliers such as Yunique and DeSL. Other suppliers include PTC and Dassault Systèmes, which began by developing software for the engineering industries and adapted their systems to the needs of soft goods companies. Specialised PLM packages are designed to support a number of key processes and activities in the textile and clothing industry, including line planning, storyboarding, colour management, computer aided design (CAD), management of fabrics and trims, management of product data, cost estimation, sourcing and supplier management, tracking a product’s development, acquiring and storing business intelligence, and reporting. The Hong Kong-based apparel manufacturer TAL Apparel is using a product called Lawson Fashion PLM to collaborate with its suppliers on the development of textiles and trims. TAL Apparel’s sister company in the USA, The Apparel Group, is using the same product to develop fabric and garment specifications with its textile suppliers, with TAL, and with garment factories. The benefits to be…
