Understanding Genetics a
Timeline of DNA Science

1700’s - it is believed that all traits are acquired.
Example - a giraffe has a long neck due to stretching to reach the leaves in the taller trees.
1800’s - Carl Linnaeus classified by visible traits.
1866 - Gregor Mendel, through pea plant breeding and research; discovered that traits are inherited not acquired- before anyone knew or understood anything about “genes”. He published what he discovered as the “principles of inheritance” - however, his ideas were not recognized for over 30 years.
1900’s - Mendel’s experiments are rediscovered, confirmed by three researchers and his paper’s are translated into English and lead to new experimental methods.
1900’s - begins the conflict over DNA or protein being the genetic material. 1905 - William Bateson is given credit for coining the word “genetics”.

1941 - Beadle and Tatum describe the theory that one gene encodes one protein. 1953 - James Watson & Francis Crick (using Rosalind Franklin’s work) discover DNA and the structure of it.
1957 - Kornberg produces DNA in a test tube.
1950’s to 60’s - Discovery of genetic diseases.
1970’s - classification by DNA starts, replacing classification by visible traits. 1980’s - Barbara McClintock discovered that genes are able to change positions on chromosomes.
1990’s - DNA is used in Forensics and medicine.
Example - Portland, Oregon has first crime conviction due to DNA fingerprinting. OJ Simpson trial makes DNA forensics big news.
Example - Humulin - insulin replacement of the pig (or other animal insulin) being used up to this time. Also, Gene Therapy used for first time - on a 4 year old girl for ADA (Boy in the Bubble Disease).

After researching, I found two studies that are similar to my experiment. One study by Sean Boyd (2007) tested to see which brand of microwave popcorn yielded the least amount of un-popped kernels. Mr. Boyd tested five brands of butter flavored microwave popcorn: Aldi, Act II, Orville Redenbacher, Jolley Time and Pop-Secret. His experiment proved his hypothesis partially wrong. Mr. Boyd hypothesized that Orville Redenbacher would be the best and Aldi's would be the worst. His experiment proved that Act II produced the least amount of un-popped kernels while Aldi's did have the most un-popped kernels on average.…

    1. When determining how much of a profit a company will make, one has to look at a few deciding factors. Two of those are total revenue and total cost. Total revenue is the sum of a company’s sales of a particular product. Total cost is how much a company pays for production which includes fixed and variable costs. After total cost is deducted from the total revenue, the money left over is a profit. The goal of most is to maximize profits the best way possible. Total revenue and cost are very important when it comes to profit maximization because they are the guidelines of production. Total revenue is found by multiplying the price of the unit by the quantity produced and when compared to the total cost of each unit produced, a company can find out how many units to produce that would better maximize profits. Profit maximization is found by looking at the difference between the total revenue and total cost and determining which has the greatest profit.…

Popcorn is one of the snack foods you will go to eat at the theater when watching a movie, or when you are at home doing movie night with the family or friends. Popcorn was also used to make different decorations all the way back to the 4700 B.C. If you don’t microwave your popcorn enough, then all the kernels will not pop and you would not have much popcorn to enjoy. If you pop the popcorn too much you would end up burning the popcorn. Different brands of microwave popcorn you have to cook at a different timeframe, so you can get all the popcorn you can out of one bag. But the question I am going to prove is which brand of popcorn would give you more popped kernels.…

The purpose of this project is to determine the fastest computer operating system for solving mathematical equations. Which operating system, Windows 7 or Ubuntu Linux, performs the best when it comes to pure number crunching? In order to test this question, the researcher ran a Java based application that benchmarks the ability of each operating system to perform a mathematical operation across three different data types and a second, more complex, mathematical operation. The Java based application, Java Micro Benchmark, performs each mathematical operation eight times per test and the researcher ran the test five times for each operating system. The mathematical operations testsed by Java Micro Benchmark are integer arithmetic, long integer arithmetic, double-precision floating point arithmetic and trigonometric arithmetic. This method gave the researcher data for forty tests per mathematical operation for each operating system. The resulting data is then compared to determine which operating system is able to process mathematical operations the fastest.…
