This is because in today’s health care system, patient care involves interaction and patient handoffs among multiple health care practitioners with varying levels of educational and training (O’Daniel, M. and Rosenstein, A. 2008). Therefore, all health professionals need to abide by their roles and responsibilities in caring for a patient and respect the roles of other health professionals in caring for a patient as well. This can be achieved by understanding and respecting the scope of practice within each healthcare profession, which outlines the roles and responsibilities of each profession. However, there are many barriers affecting role understanding amongst healthcare professionals that cause resistance to collaborate and communicate with other healthcare professionals that can sometimes lead to effects on patient care. For example, when other colleagues are perceived to take over one’s roles, respondents become protective of their own scope of practice and may show more resistance to collaborate (Suter, E., Arndt, J., Arthur, N., Parboosingh, J., Taylor, E., & Deutschlander, S. 2009). This can cause miss-communication between colleagues and ultimately prolong the stay of patients due to medical mistakes brought on by lack of understanding or confusion of roles between healthcare professionals.
