The exam questions will be based on all the information covered in lectures since the beginning of this class on October 3rd.
You will particularly need to demonstrate precise knowledge of the cultural dimensions and theories studied in class including precise definitions and meanings of:
i. The Hofstede and Trompenaars dimensions ii. Proxemics iii. Chronemics iv. Highand low context cultures
There will be 3 sections
Section 1.
15 multiple choice questions: 2 points for a correct answer, 0 for a wrong answer. Five or six questions may require two correct answers. In this case, if you do not identify the two correct answers, you will obtain 0 points.
Section 2
There will be two short questions requiring short answers about information from the lectures.
Section 3
There will be two situation analyses.
As explained in the final class, these situations require students to
• identify the cultural problem
• explain the reasons for the problem(s) with specific reference to the appropriate cultural dimensions studied in class
Students must :
• identify the type of culture to which the individuals belong (collective, individualist
Reading
particularist, universalist...etc)
• identify the appropriate cultural dimension(s) and attitudes to time, space and communication context which may explain the individuals’ behaviour and cause the conflict in the situation
• always define the theories ! .
The article ‘To see ourselves as others see us’ contains very useful information which will help you to revise the differences between anglo-saxon and latin cultures. This article has been posted on teh intranet for several weeks and is still there!
If you have not already read this article, you must read the final pages (67-70) which are tables giving advice for dealing with Anglo-Saxon and French managers.
Trompenaars definitions
Some students have asked for more descriptions of Trompenaars’ dimensions
