To what extent has globalisation impacted on the industrial relations system of any given organisation? [30 marks]
In the discussion the National Railways of Zimbabwe would be used as the study organisation. Macdonald (1997) defines industrial relations as the means by which employers, trade unions, and government interact in the labour market and accommodate each other, primarily for the purpose of regulating employment relationships. Bratton and Gold (2000) agrees with Macdonald (1997) and defines industrial Relations as the processes of regulation and control over the employment relationship. In Kayode and Maroof (2013), Fajana (2005) defines industrial relations as “encompassing every conceivable feature affecting the management of labour (human resources) including activities of government or its agents in such manpower management”. Industrial Relations therefore is the activity of reconciling the differing perception of government, employers, employers organisations, employees and trade unions on the labour market and the behaviour of the parties involved to ensure employment hamony. Industrial relations and globalization co-relate in the labour market, and has differing influence.
Globalization affect industrial relations in several ways which includes altering the power of trade unions and employees during negotiation, reduces employees earnings, harmonizes labour laws, results in increased competitiveness, increases integration of economic activities, results in job relocation and outsourcing, increase labour mobility, results in rapid technological changes, changes in work content and working
