Using email as a channel of communication detracts from interpersonal communication because it removes key elements such as facial expressions, gestures and tone of voice. Facial expressions are essential when communicating as they show emotion, provide feedback and show the speaker that the listener is engaged. Likewise gestures help deliver the verbal message and express emotions. Additionally Paralinguistics directly affects the content of what is said. Non-verbal communication is a fundamental part of interpersonal communication as it helps to understand the speaker and receiver, however email subtracts these elements.
Nonverbal communication, more specifically facial expressions are an effective way to show emotion, listen and give feedback without saying a word when communicating .Interpersonal communication is the exchange of information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal communication (Fiske, 2010). Nonverbal cues are described as “behaviours other than words themselves that form a socially shared coding system” (James, 1998) .The face reveals much of the emotional disposition, and there are strong cultural and social messages involved in suppressing or expressing emotions (Eunson, 2012:261). A person can express many emotions with slight movements of the face. Such as happiness, fear, anger, disgust, sadness and distress and it is relied heavily upon to understand one another when communicating (Carter, 2003).
