In my opinion, Baker did not succeed in achieving his goal in his final interview with Rennalls when Rennalls hand-in his resignation later. But, Baker actually create unnecessary new problem for him and ultimately for the company itself. At first, the intention for Baker to held this final interview with Matthew Rennalls which also his closest friends, to try to know Rennalls better and eliminating invisible and well- repressed racial consciousness within Rennalls. Non-verbal communication play very powerful part in daily life. According to expert, a substantial portion of our communication comes in form of nonverbal (Cherry, 2014). Meanwhile, according to Kendra Cherry (2014), she listed nine type of common nonverbal communication which is Facial Expressions, Gestures, Paralinguistics, Body Language and Posture, Proxemics, Eye Gaze, Haptics, Appearance and Artifacts. This type of nonverbal communication can found and we do it without we even noticed about it.
In this study case, nonverbal communication can found in form of Artifacts, Body language and Posture, Gestures as well as Facial Expression. For instance, when Rennalls enter the Baker`s office, immediately Baker offer Rennalls, a cigarettes. This is nonverbal communication in form of Artifacts which implies a sign of friendship and informality between Baker and Rennalls. Another nonverbal communication between Baker and Rennalls is when Baker noticed that Rennalls stiffen in his chair when he state that he was offering “the benefit of my long experience” and then he made an alteration in his conversation. Also, Rennalls nodded in agreement when Baker justified the need for the meeting which Baker interprets Rennalls nodded as sign for him to continue the meeting. He should think carefully the strategy that he want to use to conduct the interview and most importantly review it before implement it especially in terms of conversation with Rennalls. It seems unnecessary to state the experience gap between European and Barracania as ways to credited Rennalls for his hard work. Also, Baker should differentiate between personal needs and work needs. Rennalls are perfect candidate for current Baker post, Chief Enginner so Baker should prioritize in assessing Rennalls to find out if he suitable for the post rather try to eliminate the manifestation of Rennalls racial consciousness which is purely personal needs not work
