According to Devito J (2004) Interpersonal communication is the communication that takes place between two or more person that are connected included father and son, employer and employee, a teacher and a student and so on. Often interpersonal communication takes place face-to-face: interacting with friends or relatives over dinner, trading secrets with intimates and talking to course mates before class. Interpersonal communication involves two interdependent people which means by what one person does will cause an impact on another person.

We gain a valuable feedback when we interact with others and therefore we can learn how we appear to others. The scene when Chuck scolds the Russian via lecturing while fixing the clock serves the purpose of learning in interpersonal communication.
Next, interpersonal communication helps us to relate. We can establish and maintain close relationships: friendships and love relationships. These relationships help us to alleviate loneliness and depression. It enables us to share our pleasures and problems with our friends or lover and generally make us feel more positive about ourselves. The purpose of relating can be seen between the relationship between Chuck Noland and Kelly.
We influence the behaviours or attitudes of others in interpersonal communication. For example, we may influence our friends to take a specific course, buy a new book and watch a new movie. To fulfil the purpose of influence, we need to control and secure agreement in our communication.
