Lahri firstly uses the concept of "failed marriages" between both Mr.Kapasi and Mrs.Das to highlight the solitary of both their lives. Both these individuals were suffering from loveless marriages. Mrs Das got married before she knew what life was and Mr.Kapasi kept on suffering from his wife's grief after their sons death. And it was exactly when both the secluded characters with desolate lives met. Mr.Kapasi imagined Mrs.Das to be a good friend observing her reluctant behaviour towards her family and assumed they would have something in common which was not exactly the case.
