Understanding cultural beliefs is necessary to a healthcare provider because cultural differences affect patients’ attitudes about medical care. Diverse beliefs and attitudes about health and medicines, may affect treatment. Also it affects the patient’s ability to understand and cope with an illness, and the consequences of medical treatment. Cultural beliefs influence patient roles and expectations. Expectations such as how much information about illness and treatment is desired, how death and dying will be managed, and processes for decision making. Some strategies for Cross-Cultural settings are, learning about the cultural traditions of the patients you care for, paying close attention to body language, lack of response, or expressions of anxiety that may signal that the patient or family is in conflict but hesitant to tell you, asking the patient and family open-ended questions to gain more information about their assumptions and expectations, and remaining nonjudgmental when given information that reflects values that differ from yours.. It affects a healthcare worker because if a patient refuses to accept treatment these differences may contribute to misunderstanding or miscommunication about health care.
ASSIGNMENT 8.1
Conflict might arise among members of the healthcare team because the team members will have varied beliefs and strategies for handling situations and patient care issues. Nurses need to listen and be tolerant. Being understanding of differences will help you to become a better healthcare provider. Ask questions, listen to the answers, be sensitive, show respect, and build trust.
