1) Understand why communication is important in the work setting
1:1: Identify different reasons why people communicate:
• To share knowledge and information
• Build and Maintain relationships
• Identify dangers
• So children can be heard and understand
• Identify problems and needs
• Follow and/or give instructions
1:2: Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of own work:
Listen to a person and acknowledge them by:
• Praise and Encouragement:
Encourage the child to do something and when they do it, let them know your pleased with them by praising them. Example: Encourage Child A to paint a picture, when he/she has done it, tell them well done, good work!
• Open Body language:
Make sure your body language is open, relaxed, This will make a child feel comfortable around you and they will feel they can trust you and be happy to talk/play with you.
• Eye contact depending on the children culture:
Eye contact is important when needed depending on the culture of child, as this tells the child you are listening and understanding them.
• Speak clearly and use the correct tone
Using the correct tone when talking to a child will let them know that you are approachable, If you sound angry then they will not want to speak to you.
When talking to a child, make sure you speak clearly so that understand you.

• Treat everyone as an individual and know and understand their needs:
Children have different needs and they all learn differently and have different ways of doing things, treating them as an individual is important, it will show them you care and that you don’t see them just as another child.
• Respect:
If you show a child respect you will get respect in return and the child will learn to trust you.
• Clear instructions, rules and boundaries:
Children need instructions, rules and boundaries so that they know what they can and cant
