Date Syllabus Prepared: October, 2013 Course Purpose and Objectives: The purpose of this course is to provide orientation to the rehabilitation profession including history, philosophy, federal legislation, contemporary issues and national organizations. This course will address rehabilitation counseling in the broadest and most interactive sense possible within the span of a semester. Awareness, advocacy, creativity, critical thinking, projecting, synthesizing, teamwork, communicating, and professional development will be expected of each student. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the history, philosophy and legislative influences as well as the purpose, function and process of rehabilitation counseling.
2. Explain the cultural, legal, political, and legislative bases of rehabilitation counseling.
3. Identify strategies for self-awareness and self-development that will support sensitivity to diversity issues;
4. Educate the public and consumers regarding the rights of people with disabilities under federal and state laws (1920-present).
5. Communicate an understanding of the organizational structure, functions, methods, and procedures applied within public and private rehabilitation agencies.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the inter-disciplinary nature and the various specialists within rehabilitation service delivery systems.
