History is something that every community has, and pieces of local history are essential to an area's culture. The Fiske Theatre is a rare gem in Northeast Louisiana. Founded in 1929, and later re-constructed in 1950, the theatre is a great marvel of architecture for its’ time. The Fiske, as locals call it, is a central part and in some ways an icon for Oak Grove, Louisiana. It was and still is a thriving business within Oak Grove.…

Having seen Frantic Assembly's 'Lovesong' last year for DRAM 1, our group decided it would be interesting to do our devised piece in the style of physical theatre.…
Doing some research, I learned about the science club in my middle school. During the science club, we did many experience relating to physics and chemistry. Every time we did an experience, I would try to apply it to an airplane. For example, after forming a group of four, we were given the task to design a go cart in auto-cad and then build it in reality. After completing the first challenge we must race it against other groups on race day. During race day, we were expected to calculate speed, drag and friction, and a few years later I did the same with a plane in my first aerospace class. Another example came in high school, when I was in my 3rd year in the robotic club and the adviser gave us a challenge. The challenge was to create a wheelchair pitching machine for a friend of his that happen to be a paralyzed baseball coach. The challenge was tough because it was the first of its kind; however, we learned about compressors, circuits, programming and how to work as a team. As a result, during my sophomore year of college, I took Physics 196 and a programming class. Luckily for me both of those classes were not a challenge because I had learned majority of the content in robotic…
A local high school theater sends out a plea for volunteers of all ages. In the planning for their yearly musical, the high schoolers realized that they not only don't have enough members to pull off such a performance, they also need donations to help pay for props and costumes and volunteers to help put sets together. This particular school has hit a rough patch this last year. During Christmas break, they suffered the loss of their drama teacher and biggest supporter to a long, heartbreaking battle against cancer. And if that wastn't enough, the participants in this club, now a student run affair, have lessened due to an extreme outbreak of mono throughout the school.…
The world has changed in many ways since Shakespear was living. That is because we have had new ideas, new inventions, and we have changed in how we do almost everything. Some of the main ways the world has changed is the way the audience acts at a play, how we are treated by our social status, and how the theaters looked and what went on inside of the theater.…
During my sophomore year in high school, I chose to enter the Principles of Art, Audio, and Video Technology elective class, which taught the basics of photography, cinematography, and other arts associated with the two. Most people looked at the class as an unchallenging way to get out of taking an art credit; however, I wanted to use this class to pursue my passion of photography. As the school year was coming to a close, my teacher offered applications into the Commercial Photography class to individuals, like myself, that exhibited a substantial interest in the subject. Although I knew I could take pictures worthy of appeal, the competition was tough, which meant that I had to step my game up in order for my teacher to accept me into the…
OPRF high school is brimming with diverse cliques, groups, and clubs. But one particular cohort seems to stand out from the rest. The theatre department, overseen by Michelle Bayer, can be described as a whirlwind of activity, with 10 official productions each year. My group researched it for the education unit, but the majority of them were unfamiliar with the activity, and I felt the overall presentation was unrepresentative of what high school theatre is. It can be characterized, primarily, by an abundance of drama, both in the acting sense, and in the social sense. Theatre kids are infamous for their diva-like attitudes, and occasional entitlement. I had the opportunity to observe these behaviors up close and personal with my shows I participated in this year.…
the assignment was to write a second person point of view informative on how to become any occupation of our choice (Naturally I chose the occupation astronaut, a occupation I knew practically nothing on beyond what I could pick up from Sandra Bullock and George Clooney). The essay was difficult to write, it challenged the entirety of my knowledge of grammar. I persevered and wrote a great paper I was proud of. In that class I learned more than how to better my writing but how to appreciate writing and the power it has. It was that class that made me realize the pen truly is mightier than the sword, as lame as that sounds.…

Take a painting for instance, you and another individual may be looking at the same painting, but you will both have different interpretations of the painting based on what you know or understand about your life. This is exactly how it may be when looking at a play. In this case, by means of ethnicity and gender. Our perceptions of ethnicity or gender may vary based on where we live, or our cultural backgrounds. For this reason, our different perceptions of ethnicity and gender may affect our understanding of a play. In plays such as M. Butterfly, Thead Hell, and Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, ethnicity and gender relates to our understanding of the play as in order to understand the play and plot we must understand the societal and gender rules of each culture.…
When I was a child, my mother noticed that I was full of too much energy for her to handle, so she sent me to an after-school theatre program at my elementary school. This was groundbreaking for me. Being the middle-child often means that you are never really the center of attention. So theatre was my salvation because I could capture the attention of an entire audience, I could make people listen to me. I had this incredible rush pulse through my blood as I stood in front of people who were paying attention, who were interested in what I was going to say next. Unfortunately, I think it is a common problem in our society for a child to feel like no cares, like they are entirely alone. I think theatre saves us from that, at least it does for me. I was never really…
