20. Salivary amylase, an enzyme in saliva that breaks down starch, has an optimal pH of 6.7- 7.0. Explain why salivary amylase is active in the mouth, but becomes inactive in the stomach. Salivary amylase is an enyme that’s active in the mouth in order to break down starch into glucose it carries it function out in the environment where the PH is 6.7- 7.0 however activity decreases are the PH changes which is the stomach where the environment is more…
3. Compare the Biuret test results of albumin and pepsin, the Benedicts, and starch results for potatoes and onions, and describe how one can determine the relative amounts of sugars present in a sample using the Benedicts test.…
Introduction: The biological membranes are composed of phospholipid bilayers, each phospholipid with hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails, and proteins. This arrangement of the proteins and lipids produces a selectively permeable membrane. Many kinds of molecules surround or are contained within cells, but water is perhaps the single most important molecule in any living system (Hayden and McNeil 2012). Since water molecules are so small, they are constantly going into and out of the cell. Osmosis is a situation where more water molecules are moving across the membrane in one direction than the other (Hayden and McNeil 2012). During osmosis the net movement of water molecules will be from a solution that has a lower osmotic concentration to a solution that has a higher osmotic concentration. When a solution has a higher concentration of solute within the cell than out, it is called hypertonic. When a solution has a lower concentration of solute within the cell than out, it is called hypotonic. And when there are equal concentrations inside and out of the cell, it is called isotonic. The relative osmotic concentration can be determined by a change in mass of the tissue.…

Figure 1 shows the average amount of absorbance for each tube, containing different levels of pH. Tube 2 had an acidic pH level, Tube 3 had a neutral pH level, and Tube 4 had a basic pH level. It is indicated that the absorbance rates were the highest for the neutral pH level, with a final absorbance rate of 0.166. This was followed by a basic pH (0.106). The acidic pH level had the least amount of absorbance with a final absorbance rate of 0.069. This reinforces the idea that the ALP enzyme worked best under conditions with a neutral pH and worked the least in an acidic pH environment.…
Purpose: In this lab, I will observe macroscopic changes that occur when mixing together certain chemicals and household cleaners. The mixing of the chemicals provided with each other and with acid/base indicators demonstrates how matter can change, and how chemistry can be seen with the naked eye. By mixing household cleaners with an acid/base indicator I hope to demonstrate how these changes can be related to everyday life.…
Problem: How can we demonstrate how enzymes work? What happens if we alter the environment of an enzyme?…
* The objective of the experiment is to assess the effect of different pH conditions on enzyme activity.…
Enzyme B produced the most maltose at a high temperature (100 ºC) and an acidic pH.…
The object of this experiment is to determine how changing the size of the beak of a finch will affect the population as well as the growth rate of the finch’s beak. The reason for the experiment is to evaluate evolution and how it affects the finch’s population, and how natural selection is always present in life. In this experiment I will show that the finch will continue to evolve until its beak has reached the optimal size for sustaining life, when changing the beak size to a much larger size we will see that the finch will have no need for further evolution of its beak and that its population will become much more stable and consistent throughout the years.…

A Dream within a Dream is a narrative poem that is published in 1849 by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was born in Boston (January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) and was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. He was famous for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. However, this poem is different from the other pieces that he has written before. It’s not mystery nor macabre, it is an elegy poem.…
A bitter tension between the jets, a self-styled “American” street gang, and the Sharks, a group of young Puerto Ricans opens the scene.
