Chapter 1: Introduction
Background of the Study
Filipinos suffer from facial problems greatly due to Philippines’ tropic weather. The air, which is humid, carrying vapor from surrounding bodies of water, is one of the major causes of skin problems like allergies, bungang-araw, itchiness, also said to be causing freckles and pimples, and the list goes on. Test results suggest that every 5 out of 11 teenagers acquire freckles. Statistics also shows that 85% of teenagers have acne, usually starting at age 11 above. In Philippines, 80% of teenagers have pimples – that is 8 out 10 teens.
The above stated declarations made us think that should we apply our knowledge within regards with this topic. Furthermore, skin problems in tropic areas, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn are very severe into such point that we think we can do something about it. Many on-counter products have been produced, and manufactured by different well-known and respected product brands though the value, in some cases, is not worth to pay for. Recapitulating the factors that cause these facial problems such as acne (or pimples), freckles, whiteheads and blackheads, we based these as the foundation of our research.
Considering what we already know, what we will know and what we want to know, we came up with the idea of constructing or formulating a soap which is made up of materials that is actually clinically proven and tested. Therefore, the use of expensive on-the-counter products can be voided, and be replaced by safe, and in natural and environmental means.
Statement of the Problem
With the basic information tackled above, could we really help aid some of the common skin problems?
If that is possible, how could we create something that is helpful in dermatological means?
Can the product be a good replacement for the on-the-counter products?
Hypotheses
With the correct information, we can formulate a safe soap using oatmeal and
