Involuntary Status Patient Case Study

This is the case of a patient who got admitted without proper evaluation to our psychiatric floor. She is a 18-year-old young female patient admitted with a suicide plan to our unit. Patient went to see her PCP for her routine checkup and, she was slightly anxious and told the PCP that she thought about suicide. Her PCP filed petition and did her first certification to admit her to psychiatric floor. Patient was explained that she will be seeing a psychiatrist for assessment and send her over to our facility. Since her PCP signed the petition and did the first cert, she is considered as an involuntary status patient. Once she came to our facility only she came to know, she was send here for admission. Her family was very upset and made problems in the unit. She came late in the evening so there was no psychiatrist available to do her second cert.
As per the hospital rules she is considered as a patient with involuntary status and need to stay until the second cert.
is done. Since it is a psychiatric facility, she need to end up staying in our hospital by herself, we don’t allow family members to stay with patients. She or anyone in her family never had any psychiatry history in the past. I explained the family the situation and they begin to cooperate. The next day the psychiatrist came and, evaluated her and, gave a negative second cert. So, she could go home. It is very uncommon to admit a patient on an involuntary status who only had a random suicide thought and never had any history before. Major issue here is the PCP didn’t do proper evaluation and send her to admit in the Mental facility and gave her false information why she is being sent to a mental health facility. This patient end up staying one night in a mental hospital without no
reason.
