IOM Report Impact on Nursing Practice The goal of nursing practice is providing patients care that is catered to their specific needs rather than what is most convenient for healthcare professionals. The key concept to the nursing practice is nurses should practice their profession to the fullest extent of their training and education. The impact of the IOM Report regarding the nursing practice is the number of medical students and residents who are entering the health profession has declined while NPs and physician assistants has increased over the years. According to The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (n.a, 2011), the demanding growth to build a primary care health setting which includes APRN’s will continue to increase due to the inclining health insurance coverage and other services under the ACA.
Although in the coming years, the profession is continuing to grow due to the millions of people covered by health insurance under the ACA, there are barriers in the health profession due to restrictive scope of practice regulations for advanced practiced registered nurses that varies in different states. According to The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (n.a, 2011), many APRN’s are not able to give patient care in which they are trained to provide.
