School officials were under the impression that having this technology would further engage their students in learning, though what they failed to address is other things it might engage their students in. Teenagers of this age already have short attention spans, and when using the internet, the moment a student gets bored they can click out and focus on something that suits them more than hundred year old articles about the Declaration of Independence, and instead spend hours scrolling though Tumblr or watching pointless music videos- or porn (Source E). A pioneer in the “Bring Your Own Device” program is Forsyth County Schools based in Cummings, Georgia. In 2010 the district researched and implemented a technology pilot program with seven schools participating. (Boulton, 2013, p. 1) Students within the district have been able to effectively research information for various tasks with the aid of technology devices within the classroom. Having technology in the classroom has given students a chance to become independent while still under the supervision of a teacher. Giving a developing child an iPad for classroom learning is harmful because it pulls away from activities that develop children’s social skills. Children seek to learn new information; whether they ask the age old question “why?”, or talk to anybody who will listen, children learn from the things around them.
