Iris Chase In The Blind Assassin

Iris chase is a 84 year old fragile lady, she starts off young in the book and then it goes off toward her future years and stops where she is now, 84 years old. She is a naive, blond woman with blue eyes. Iris is the speaker and the protagonist in the novel. Also, Iris is the real author of the The Blind Assassin novella inside the book. She is the reason why the entire book is even written. Without her there would be no The Blind Assassin; the story revolves around Iris’ life. It goes from her birth to the Chase family wealth crisis and ultimately leading to the suicide of her sister, Laura Chase. Iris chase talks about her affair with Alex Thomas and how she had his bastard child. Iris plays the most important role because it is her life;
if there was no Iris there is no story. Iris in Greek resembles a goddess, a goddess is suppose to help out those who believe in her. Iris helped Laura for her entire life, destiny made it to where Iris had to take care of Laura. She was Laura’s goddess, she helped Laura when any problem tried to hurt Laura, she was there every moment of her life. However, just like how Iris in Greek mythology hurt some of those who trusted her, so did Iris by having a secret fair with Alex and breaking Laura’s heart. One key quote which shows the character of Iris is, “I forgave her, of course. I always did.” Iris is talking about Laura and how she forgives her every time. Laura commits mistakes which harm Iris and others, but is always forgiven by Iris. This quote reveals the kindness in Iris’ heart; she resembled love and kindness toward her sister and does not stay angry at her. At the end of the day she forgives her sister no matter what. The kind, generosity personality that Iris has is revealed through this quote, she is always loving no matter what. Iris has gone through hardships in her life but that did not make her a cold hearted person, she was still a loving and forgiving woman.
Another important character in The Blind Assassin is Laura Chase. Laura is the sister of Iris Chase, whom she loves dearly.
Laura died at age 25 by driving off a bridge, she was sad and depressed. Laura was a unique character, she was literate and took everything seriously. She was not very amusing and took every word for their literal definition. Laura has a strong faith in God as she mentions God before she does anything and believes in God a lot. One surprising fact about Laura is what she does not like veterans being disregarded. Also, Laura cannot handle the ill will of the universe, she cannot handle a cat being run over and things similar to this. She is a blonde, white female with gorgeous eyes. Laura fell in love with Alex Thomas as she later finds out that he cheated on her and had a secret affair with Laura’s sister, Iris Chase. Her name does not really signify anything as she is just a member of the Chase family. However, Laura’s role in this book is tremendous. The book starts off with her death and goes back in time and talks about her and Iris’ life prior to Laura’s death. Without Laura, maybe Iris would never think of writing this book. Maybe Iris would never feel remorse after her sister’s death, maybe Iris would not be stuck in hell for her entire life. If there was no Laura, there might not have been The Blind Assassin. A key quote revealing Laura is, “This is how the girl who couldn't speak and the man who couldn't see fell in love.”(Page 250) This quote is from Laura’s love story inside of the novel; this quote helps show the
loving personality Laura has. Despite Laura and Alex were from different social classes, it did not stop her from loving him. She was higher up in class than Alex and still loved him with all her heart. She believed that she had found her special man, but when Alex confesses his secret affair she is heartbroken. The quote shows how Laura is not a gold digger, she did not try to find the perfect man. All Laura wanted was love and that is what she got until Alex revealed the truth which ultimately lead to Laura suiciding.
