Irrational Beliefs
Most emotions are the result of our way of thinking. Irrational beliefs are messages about life we send to ourselves that keep us from growing emotionally. Fallacies are a mistaken belief, especially one based on unsound arguments. Fallacies lead to illogical and false conclusions that turn to be debilitative emotions. An idea is irrational if: It distorts reality and is illogical. It prevents the person from reaching their goals or leads to unhealthy emotions. These ideas can also lead to self-defeating behavior. Some irrational beliefs a person can have about themselves could be: I do not deserve positive attention from others, I should never burden others with my problems or fears. I am worthless. I am the worst person on earth. I am powerless I can't solve my problems. …show more content…
This is when it can manifest into depression. Depression causes unnecessary suffering and is a risk factor for suicide. It can also cause a person to have sleep disorder whether the person may sleep too much or not enough. Shifting in appetite and weight change can occur. When a person enters a depressive state they are more likely to be irritable or suffer from anxiety. Feelings of persistent sadness, guilt, hopelessness, or loss of self-worth. When we feel threatened, or our superego becomes too demanding we use defense mechanisms to protect ourselves from feelings of anxiety or guilt. Sometimes irrational thoughts are based on a person's internal defense mechanisms. We develop this to mitigate personal anger in an attempt to avoid facing the truth about ourselves or our immediate circumstances. If someone imposes expectations related to a stressful issue, irrational thought are likely to set in. Most defense mechanisms are fairly unconscious that means most of us do not realize we are using them at the
