There are individuals who are not capable of responsibility yet are placed into positions of tremendous power. Resultantly, they extort others. In the novel Animal Farm, Napoleon is the leader of a farm appropriately entitled “Animal Farm”. In a larger breadth, the film V for Vendetta features Adam Sutler as the High Chancellor of England. The novel and film explore the theme: dangers of an irresponsible leader. They do so by examining abuse of language as an instrument of control, betrayal of trust, and the implementation of major characters.
In both pieces, the leader utilizes language as an instrument of control, which highlights the dangers of an irresponsible one. In Animal Farm, Napoleon twists the …show more content…
In Animal Farm, the author explores the murder of one major character, while in V for Vendetta, the oppression and killing of multiple extras. In Animal Farm, Boxer was a good-natured, lovable horse because his strength was only outmatched by his will -- he inspired others. The novel states, “Boxer was the admiration of everybody. He had been a hard worker even in Jones’s time, but now he seemed more like three horses than one; there were days when the entire work of the farm seemed to rest on his mighty shoulders” (Orwell 11). After being terribly injured, he collapses. Many animals rush to help him, and Napoleon promises to arrange for a veterinary hospital to treat him. Yet, when Boxer’s transport is leaving, one of the animals notice that the vehicle is labeled “glue factory” (Orwell 47). Unfortunately, Boxer is too weak to escape. Napoleon reassures the other animals that the label was incorrect. Though, Boxer is never seen again, heavily hinting that they had been deceived. In V for Vendetta a major character, who goes by the name “V”, sends thousands of citizens Guy Fawkes masks and capes to join him in his revolution. The costume becomes very popular, and Sutler's demands its popularity be curbed. He orders his police force to oppress or kill anyone caught wearing the costume. The citizens demand they be allowed to, but the police spare no one. Citizens …show more content…
In Animal Farm, Napoleon and his followers are all animals; Napoleon is a boar (Orwell 6). All are capable of speaking English, but only the pigs are intelligent enough to read and write (Orwell 9). In V for Vendetta, all characters are human. V wears a Guy Fawkes mask for the entirety of the film and therefore appears odd. However, he is human. Moreover, citizens act in the same nature as one would expect. They are largely manipulated through the news’ use of words and dramatic pictures and videos. For instance, when V raids a news station to broadcast a message, he escapes flawlessly. Though, the news portrays a man getting shot and frames it as V’s death (McTeigue, V for Vendetta). In the analyzation of Animal Farm, one finds that animals were most likely used instead of humans because Napoleon ran a communist society. Karl Marx, who inspired the foundation of many communist regimes in the twentieth century famously, said, “The worker in his human functions no longer feels himself to be anything but an animal. What is animal becomes human and what is human becomes animal” (Estranged Labour, "Karl Marx"). However, Animal Farm is at a disadvantage as a novel because the reader must visualize the contents themselves. Moreover, it is is difficult to connect with animals in comparison to humans. Even
