Is Google Making USupid (Or Smarter)?
Is Google making us stupid(and smarter)? According to articles a and c, it states that Google is making us smarter. On the other hand, article b and d state that Google is making us stupid. First, we will look at Nicholas Carr perspective on the question, next we will so Peter Norvig statement before finally my perspective on the subject. In article B it states that Google is making us stupid. For example, author Nicholas Carr states “ The greater our concentration, the richer our thoughts. If we are distracted, we understand less, remember less, and learn less.” This is significant because the author explains that we are distracted by our electronics, so, therefore, we remember less, understand less, and we learn less. For instance, in the text states “ The Net bombard us with messages and other bits of data, and every one of those interruptions breaks our train of thought, We end up scatterbrained. The fact is you’ll never think deeply if you’re always googling, texting, and surfing.” Basically, Carr is saying that Google is doing all the work for us and we are constantly getting distracted. So, how are we supposed to get smarter? As author and Director of research at The New York Times Peter Norvig states that Google is not making us stupid. We learn from people around us every day sometimes it's Google. Google allows us to gather information by giving us a website where we can read from. The effect of being able to have access to information is that we are getting smarter individually as well as collectively. We are able to think better and faster because of google.
